Beating their wives’ children has been a traditional hobby of stepfathers for decades. Usually, however, those beatings amount to a classic belt-whip or a sturdy backhand. Few, if any, venture into full-on face-biting.Regardless, that’s what Thurston County Sheriff’s Deputies are saying Scott Anthony Newhouse, a 33-year-old man from Yelm, did to his stepson last week. The Olympian

reports on Saturday that Newhouse, who has a court history a mile long, told deputies that the incident happened when an after-work booze-up turned into a family squabble.Apparently Newhouse and his stepson were doing some work out in Lakewood, and when they finished, they decided to unwind by stopping for a few drinks at a local watering hole. After several of such, Newhouse wanted to go home. But since his car is equipped with one of those ignition interlock devices that people with DUI convictions get to prevent them from driving drunk, Newhouse had to have his stepson start the car and drive home. The grand gesture wasn’t enough to satisfy stepdaddy, though; deputies say that on the way home, after a stop in which Newhouse got out and was “sliding around on the snow and ice,” he became enraged and started assaulting his stepson–both while getting back into the car and on the remainder of the trip home. Eventually he supposedly bit off a hunk of his stepson’s nose. After that, the victim stopped the car and got out on Mounts Road, where police apparently found him after a caller reported seeing someone who was covered in blood.Newhouse was charged with second-degree assault, but got out of jail when he posted $750 bail.Once again, that’s $750 bail for making a snack of someone’s face.
