As participatory journalism, it was something of a poor man’s George Plimpton – not on the level of quarterbacking the Lions, boxing Archie Moore, or pitching to Willie Mays. But Jim Moore’s column today – it gets the top billing on the P-I website – is a fun read as he squares off in a game of H-O-R-S-E with Seattle Storm and WNBA all-star guard Sue Bird. Memorable is this Walter Mitty-ish paragraph, as he practices up for the big game in his driveway:The final shot gave me hope — a long one with a bad angle from the beauty bark, launched over a stone wall and a Yao Ming maple into the basket, good night everybody, thanks for coming.”How’d he fare against Bird? Well, says Moore: “We could have played S-U-P-E-R-C-A-L-I-F-R-A-G-I-L -I-S-T-I-C-E-X-P-I-A-L-I-D-O-C-I-O-U-S and it wouldn’t have mattered.”
