Artists Jesse Brown and Todd Lown apparently decided that those boring rectangular boxes that are all over downtown need a little sprucing up. With grants from the city Department of Neighborhoods and the West Edge Marketing Committee, they have set to work painting 27 of them on First and Second Avenues. Brown, who has painted a number of murals around town, including one of jazz musicians outside the Seattle Art Museum during its remodel, says that each box will have a different design. The one above near the Pike Place Market, which the artists were working on yesterday, will feature street performers and flying fish.But what the heck are those boxes anyway? According to Brown, they contain the controls for traffic signals.
