After a federal judge in Tacoma yesterday retained a ban on releasing the names of those who supported the Washington “marriage-protection” measure Referendum 71, a California judge continued his stay on Prop 8 today, putting off same-sex marriage ceremonies at least until next Wednesday. More legal action is expected in both cases. Prop 8 opponents are threatening an injunction and Ref. 71 backers – who lost in the Supreme Court – were allowed another chance to make a narrower argument. They will now try to show that release of supporters’ names has produced threats of violence and harassment. Attorney James Bopp claims supporters “have received death threats and have had their personal property destroyed after standing up to protect the institution of marriage.”
