A Tacoma police officer awoke last night to the sound of someone smashing windows. When he left the house, the cop saw two men in hooded sweatshirts running away from his patrol car. The tires had been slashed, the windows had been bashed and on the rear panel was a spraypainted note: “Oscar Grant was here.”Grant (pictured above) was the 22-year-old Oakland man shot and killed by a transit cop on New Years’ Day in 2009. Yesterday, former Officer Johannes Mehserle — the man who pulled the trigger on the unarmed, handcuffed Grant — was sentenced for involuntary manslaughter.Mehserle was the first-ever Bay Area cop charged with murder for an on-duty shooting. But the jury, which featured no black members, chose not to convict him for second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter, charges that would have brought more than a five-year minimum jail sentence.Below is a photo of the Tacoma police cruiser.
