With Krist Novoselic blogging over on the Daily Weekly, and controversy stirred up over Sasha Frere-Jones’ piece on the whiteness of indie rock, it’s the perfect time to retrieve a classic from the Seattle Weekly archives: “Is Grunge Too White?” The piece was published in January 1996, before many media websites were up, including ours, so fair warning: It’s a mondo PDF. [UPDATE: Sorry, folks, we lost the link in a recent redesign. Will work to restore!]The piece was great then, and still relevant now. (The author, my good friend Mike Romano, is now a criminal defense attorney in SF.) Read it and weep, losers.
