Willie Nelson plays the Puyallup Fair on Sept. 7. Tickets are $40 to $60, and go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday via thefair.com/concerts.Now here’s a Puyallup Fair concert that rivals only The Flaming Lips for sheer appropriateness. Willie Nelson’s music will not only be emanating from every carny booth at the Puyallup Fair this year, it will be coming from the main stage, when Nelson brings his band — and, possibly, his new cover of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” — on September 7.I spoke to Nelson in 2007 before his Fourth of July Picnic at the Gorge. He told me one of the reasons he started the annual event so many decades ago was because: “I wanted to find a way to bring together the hippies and the rednecks, kind of on the order that Woodstock did. And [they ] realize they don’t have anything to fear from each other: The hippies, the rednecks, the Democrats, the Republicans. We don’t preach any politics. We just play a few gospel songs, through out a few peace signs and get going.”He’ll have his work cut out for himself at the Fair.
