Who: DeloreanWhen: 7:30Where: Broad Street StageIn true European style, the Spanish foursome Delorean looked like they hated all us Americans when they took the stage tonight. And in true American fashion, I’m a little in awe of how un-self-consciously hip these Europeans seem. They walked out there knowing we were going to love them. A combination of samplers, synth, drums (which are easy to overlook on the gloss of the band’s record, Subiza, but sound phenomenal live) guitar, and buzzy bass, Delorean opened their set with skittering, celestial instrumentals; it’s magical and sounds even better once frontman Ekhi Lopetegi’s mesmerizing vocals kicked in. The one word that keeps coming to me when I think of this music is uplifting; it’s the exact music I’d expect to hear walking through the pearly gates of heaven. The band continued on to the warm, chant-y “Stay Close,” and then broke into “Real Love,” at which point I was shoved aside by a train of dancers and a unicorn on a stick. The entire Broad Street field erupted into movement; the joy was absolutely palpable in the music and the audience; it was the best moment of my Bumbershoot.
