Who: CorderoWhen: 5 p.m., Sept. 5Where: Northwest Court StageWhen Cordero first started playing, I felt a little bit awkward that there were chairs set up and the audience — a good portion of whom were old enough to be my parents — occupied those chairs with no visible sign of removing their asses from said seats for the first three or four songs. Well, except this one guy in a Rat City Rollergirls tank. Gawkers be damned — that guy was shaking his ass with reckless abandon. I loved it. But the crowd’s initial lack of enthusiasm didn’t last. Cordero (named for Puerto Rican frontwoman Ani Cordero) persevered, playing Ani Cordero’s Latin alt-country songs, which are about escapism, the first lady bull fighter and affairs of the heart, among other things. Most of the songs were in Spanish, so often either Ani or her drummer provided a brief synopsis beforehand. And I was pleased to see that by the end of the show, the space in front of the stage was full and most of the people around the outskirts were dancing, too.
