The talented star was only 22 when he died in a tragic plane crash. Who in Seattle could be more suited to pay tribute to Holly than local rockabilly band Billy Joe and The Dusty 45s? They took the Triple Door stage late evening to perform a slew of hits by the late musician. The venue was packed with Holly fans young and old last night. The crowd cheered in delight when the band launched into familiar bits of nostalgia like “Peggy Sue” and joined lead singer Billy Joe Huels in a toast to Holly midway through the show. The older folks even got up and started swing dancing. (I would’ve joined, had I known how to.) After performing a slew of Holly’s hits, the quartet reentered the stage for an encore and tested out some material from their upcoming album. Oddly enough, Huels sounded more like Holly at this time than at any other time during the show. I dug it anyway. The Dusty 45s really know how to turn on the charm and work a crowd.My only complaint: Why didn’t the guys perform “Earth Angel”?! It’s by far the sweetest Holly song out there.
