Who: Balkan Beat BoxWhere: State Farm StageWhen: 7:30 p.m.The last time a clarinet got invited to a party it was circa Miles Davis, and things were different back then. Balkan Beat Box’s name says it all. They’ll start of a song with some multitonal chanting and gypsy-esque saxophone, and by the end they’ll mix it up with tight and fast electro rhythms and serious hip-hop pleasure The name excludes, however, the sweaty Latin beats, dub thump and reggae roll. It might sound gimmicky on paper, but there’s an obvious sincerity (and a serious seductiveness) to Balkan Beat Box’s product; it takes a second to realize just how many cultures are pitted in to this sound. These guys have appeal beyond its creative cross-ethnic approach and fire-hot energy, attracting an incredibly diverse crowd–twenty-somethings, tweens, moms, hippies, hipsters, hip-hop fans, anyone–and unifying them in one hyperactive, liberated dance party.Note: This post originally went up Sunday night but has been backdated for continuity purposes.
