Tom CarlsonThese guys have a lot in common.Onstage, Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams are cut from two very different cloths. One is an erratic, prolific, and often brilliant enfant terrible who effortlessly jumps back and forth between alt-country and rock. The other is the Elton John of Canada, only straighter. But the dissimilarities end there. The Adamses both spell their rhyming first names with a “y.” They were coupled at #4 on an infamous list of the 10 Most Hated Men on Rock that resulted in the author’s life being threatened by overzealous Paul McCartney fans. They both have songs titled “Everything I Do,” although Bryan does it for you too. And it turns out the two share a birth date: November 5. Bryan is 51, Ryan is 36. Happy b-day, dudes! It all makes you wonder whether there’s more to Ryan’s ongoing refusal to cover “Summer of ’69” –he’s been known to viciously lace into any fan who requests it, often insisting that they be removed from the building–than meets the ear. But really, if he wanted to disassociate himself from the Canadian king of the power ballad, he should have taken our advice: “If you didn’t want to be confused with Bryan Adams–or, short of that, teased a little for being one consonant short of Canada’s pint-size pride–you should have changed your fucking name. Lots of rock stars do it.”
