This summer marks the fiftieth anniversary of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ rockabilly-and-roll hit “Shakin’ All Over,” which was the number one single in the UK half a century ago. Though the person who uploaded the original audio to YouTube felt it would be best accompanied by video of Elvis rather than, say, a vintage photo of the band (and has been soundly berated in the comments section for it), the song in the video above is the original Johnny Kidd and the Pirates version. Over the past five decades, the most famous artists to cover the song are arguably the Guess Who, whose version of the song charted in the US, and (just) the Who, whose fuzzed-out hippie version does the original no favors. Of all the artists who’ve covered the song over the years, though, it’s Boston country singer Eilen Jewell who finally managed to do the song justice with her sultry 2009 homage to the sweaty, knock-kneed power of adolescent lust. Johnny Kidd would be proud.
