Sanjaya performs with Black Nativity at the Intiman Theatre through December 27.You could be forgiven for not recognizing Sanjaya Malakar soloing with Black Nativity, the Langston Hughes-penned show in its 12th season at the Intiman Theatre, what with his new short, short hair and all. The Federal Way vocalist–who, um, moved the judges in American Idol’s sixth season–is soloing in all 31 of Black Nativity’s performances. Malakar was originally scheduled to sing a Michael Jackson medley during the show, but royalty issues put the kibosh on that idea before the show got underway. He’s singing “His Eyes Are On the Sparrow” instead. Asked how she was able to pin Sanjaya down for Black Nativity, show organizer/lead Pastor Patrinell Wright reminds us that Sanjaya is a veteran of her Total Experience Gospel Choir. “After Simon (Cowell) got through beating him up, he grew a lot,” she says. Black Nativity runs at the Intiman Theatre through December 27.
