Reykjavik, Iceland’s Olof ArnaldsFriday at Neumos, Seattleites Sean Nelson (Harvey Danger, etc.), David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, etc.), and Tomo Nakayama (Grand Hallway, etc.) welcome Reykjavik artists Olof Arnalds, Snorri Helgason, Gudrid Hansdottir, and Nive Nielsen to town for the “Reykjavik Calling: Sister City Showcase.” To better get to know our Icelandic brothers and sisters, we asked singer-songwriter Arnalds — as we sometimes do of visiting artists — to sort her iTunes library by plays, and show us the 10 songs she’s played the most. Here’s what we learned:Caetano Veloso, “Tonada De Luna Llena”: I think this is one of my favorites at the moment. The continuity of the movement through different phases of orchestration fascinate me. Caetano´s voice then ties everything together like a silver thread. Daniel Lanois, “Carla”: This is a song that is always stuck somewhere in my sub-conscious, when I hear it it’s like meeting an old friend. I’ve heard it a few times when my producer Skuli Sverrisson plays it to me. It has this immediate feel that makes me miss it as soon as it´s over.Michael Jackson covers Abba’s “Thank You for the Music”: The first time I heard this I almost immediately broke into tears, because despite his very young age at the time of the recording, there is so much artistry, fragile generosity, and pure expression in Michael Jackson’s voice. Joni Mitchell, “All I Want”: I have been pointed in Mitchell’s music’s direction for some time, but due to my unreserved time when it comes to research I wasn’t exposed to her until my sister Klara Arnalds played me this song and it immediately moved me. I was taken by the melody, but it also really helped when Klara pointed some of the lyrics out to me. Otis Redding, “Hard io Handle”: Another blessing from my younger sister. We had had a very hectic day and were about to go onstage in a matter of hours. She put the song on and said that once we would dance to it our spirits would be rejuvenated. It worked!Fairuz, “Mechwar”: My favorite song with the marvelous singer Fairuz. So intensively subtle, powerful and feminine. Violeta Parra, “Casamiento De Negros”: I was very happy when I heard Violeta Parra for the first time, such amazing power, making everything out of nothing.Bing Crosby, “Do You Hear What I Hear”: Very funny about this song, it seems to come on randomly on the computer of different friends. Whenever it happens I wish them Merry Cristmass, regardless of the seasonTheme song of Barbapapa (in various languages): It’s one of the silly things I like doing to rest my mind. Listening to this song in all different languages is both moving and entertaining.Devendra Banhart, “Chinese Children”: I just heard this song recently. It´s great!Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
