Nikki BensonWho: D. Black and SpacemanWhere: EMP Sky ChurchWhen: 8 p.m. It felt appropriate that Seattle rapper D. Black spent much of his performance looking at the sky. The highly spiritual MC, who has transformed his life from a former gangbanger to a man of God, is more interested in making music that uplifts people rather than drags folks downward. So last night, Seattle audiences got an early taste of D. Black the religious-minded MC. The all-ages crowd seemed really receptive to his music as he ran through several songs off of his newest release, Ali’yah. While sporting a kippah, Star of David, and tzitzit’s (Black studies the Hebraic roots of Christianity) he put on a really strong showcase for the fans. He also brought a few music family members on stage to help him out during his set. Spaceman made a couple of appearances as did Grynch and Sportn’ Life songstress Marissa. For the most part, however, it was just a great opportunity for folks curious about D. Black’s growth to hear the positivity of the music. He also sold copies of Ali’yah after the show even though it doesn’t come out until Tuesday. So it really was a mini-album release party. D. Black is performing a full set this Wednesday night at the Crocodile for those who want to see more.
