Nanci Griffith will be performing at the Woodland Park Zoo on Sunday, which got me thinking. I grew up listening to her soothing melodies, heart-felt lyrics and feel-good folksy vibe. While I love her music, what I remember most is my misinterpretations of her lyrics. This may seem strange but through my misinterpretations, her music became even more meaningful to me. My all time favorite song is Griffith’s “Everything’s Comin’ Up Roses.” The song is dark and fairly depressing song with a chorus that goes, “Oh but everything is comin’ up roses / And when I’m pushing daises / They’ll want roses anyway.” However, when I was six I thought the lines were “Everything is comin’ up roses / When they were fishing up daises / There were roses in the way.” Due to my misinterpretation I always found it hopeful and inspiring. Of course a six-year-old would think that life is all about an overabundance of flowers. Inspired by my endearing childhood memory I asked around the Weekly office for some more misinterpreted song lyrics. Face it, we have all made asses of ourselves while screaming the completely wrong lyrics at the top of our lungs. Here is what I found:What are your best misinterpreted song lyrics?
