Ms Mr Singer Lizzy Plapinger and producer Max Hershenow hit it big with a carefully crafted Tumblr campaign last year before releasing debut album Secondhand Rapture in September. It makes sense, then, that their music is trendy and modern-sounding, a blend of electro-pop, R&B, and indie rock that sounds like everything and nothing all at once. With Wildcat! Wildcat! Gov’t Mule Heading into its 20th year, this noted Southern-rock jam band is back with its first record of new material in four years. Vintage Mule through and through, Shout! finds the band returning once again to the hard-edge, loose blues that has defined its sound throughout the years. Something about the group keeps guitarist/singer Warren Haynes coming back, despite his marquee slot in the Allman Brothers Band and his own successful solo career. “It’s just a really good vibe,” he says. “The four of us [Matt Abts, drums; Danny Louis, keys; Jorgen Carlsson, bass] love playing music together, and there’s a chemistry that happens between us that doesn’t happen anywhere else.” There’s a strong sense of that chemistry on the new double-disc release: the album proper plus a bonus disc of the same tracklist featuring guest vocalists. “To my knowledge, nobody has ever done this before, which was one of the things we found appealing about the concept once we stumbled on to it,” says Haynes, who enlisted the help of Elvis Costello, Jim James, and Dave Matthews to interpret the band’s tunes. About those songs: “We do a different set list every night. And we keep track of every show so that when we go back to Seattle, we’ll play a completely different show than whatever we played last time we were there.” So even if you’ve seen Gov’t Mule a million times, you haven’t seen them like you will tonight. Us On Roofs calls itself “adventure rock.” It’s an apt name: The tunes they craft are swirly, misty songs that sound like floating down a river or trekking through a canyon.
