Morrissey – Greatest HitsNevermind the fact there have been almost as many Morrissey compilations released as studio records – this Greatest Hits collection is a whole new breed. And I’m not kidding when I say “new.” Nearly two-thirds of the fifteen tracks are culled from the last three years of Mozz’s career, with both You Are The Quarry and Ringleader of the Tormentors heavily represented. Although I wouldn’t go so far to say those songs are bigger hits than “Suedehead,” “Last of the Famous International Playboys” or “Everyday is Like Sunday,” I’m thankful that those songs actually made the cut, along with a cover of Patti Smith’s “Redondo Beach.” Also included in this very uneven and misshapen greatest hits comp is the new, previously unreleased “That’s How People Grow Up.” I think I’ll still stick with Bona Drag, Viva Hate, and Kill Uncle on shuffle, thank you. See him next: Sorry, you missed him at Paramount last year. But if you’re like a couple of passionate Mozz fans I know, you’ll wait outside his Los Angeles home just to catch a glimpse.Man Man – Rabbit Habits It makes sense that these Philadelphia sideshow freaks were signed to Anti-. After all, Anti- is home of one of their main musical influences, Tom Waits. Rabbit Habits is the group’s third full-length, capturing the essence of their vaudevillian-piano-circus-stomp that makes them such a great live band. Mr. Bungle should get back together and bring Man Man along for the ride. That would make sense as well. See them next: No Seattle dates planned for their upcoming North American tour (closest they get is San Francisco on April 23.)The B-52’s – FunplexFunplexes may have been popular in the 20th century, what with mini-golf, go-carts, AND batting cages all in one place, yielding hours of fun. But now, it seems like most of them have been turned into dilapidated ruins. So sad. Even sadder is that the reformed new wave/pop group B-52’s had the idea to call their first album in sixteen(!) years, Funplex. Sure, it’s a thing of the past that we wish we could go back and visit and share wonderful memories with, but unfortunately we’ll never get them back. Same goes for The B-52’s – they should’ve swallowed their pride and been immortalized as a great product of the ’80s and ’90s. Can’t say the same for those terrible laser tag tents that ultimately killed the “funplex” businesses. See them next: May 6 at Showbox
