You might expect this U District beer bar to be overpopulated with Abercrombie-sporting business majors, but the fact is, the Monkey Pub is nearly frat boy–free. Despite its prime location within the three or four blocks that might as well be known as the Ave Annex, this charmingly no-frills rock and roll club is more akin to Zak’s than Dante’s across the street. With just shy of 20 beers on tap, a menu perfectly suited to those who frequent the frozen-food aisle, a nice array of gaming opportunities, and a damn decent jukebox, this pretension-free pub is the perfect place for slumming, shooting pool, or seeing a band.
