Last Tuesday, I journeyed north to Bert’s Tavern on Bothell Way to catch DJ Fehronemo host a Christmas night karaoke show. We’ve got some great KJs around here, but my all-time favorite is Fehrone Williams. Not only is he the friendliest man I know, he’s also an amazing singer with a killer repertoire, and no other host can make a slow night memorable like he can.I arrived at 9 pm, just as Fehrone started things off with a sweet rendition of the Donny Hathaway classic “This Christmas,” and Bert’s was as packed as any k-bar I’ve ever been to. I forgot about how big a drinking night this holiday was. There were easily 60 people there, and it was mostly kids in their mid-20s. I managed to squeeze into a spot at the bar next to where the servers picked up drink orders.The place reminds me a lot of The Caroline Tavern, where it looks like a house from the outside and a cozy neighborhood watering hole indoors. The bar is on the main level, and there is a lower level a couple steps down where they have pool, video games and a beer pong table.It’s been a long time since I’ve ventured outside the city and found a scene like this. I didn’t even bother grabbing a song book the first hour I was there because I was happy to just kick back and check out all the hot young chicks. And the dudes, as hard as they were attacking the Jameson shots, weren’t acting like tools. Everyone was being cool and most of them were draped in Seahawks gear. I felt right at home. The performances were solid, and Fehrone’s choice of songs between numbers kept the house party atmosphere going all night. The best singer (besides the KJ) was a guy named Wyatt who he delivered a very smooth “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. We also got a really good “Sussudio” by Phil Collins, and Wyatt’s buddy came through with the most random pick of the night, “Get Over It” by the Eagles.There weren’t too many female singers, but this one blond cutie who reminded me of a young Reese Witherspoon, sang a sexy offering of “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera that I captured on the new Galaxy III I got from Santa and (ahem) revisited later that night when I got home. I got up to sing around 11 and got my ass kicked by Bryan Adams “Summer of 69.” It’s a song I try every few years in the hopes that my voice can finally handle it. but it never has. Since it was so busy, I was only able to see Fehrone sing one other song, “September” by Earth Wind and Fire, which got everybody dancing.
