Justin Martin plays See Sound Lounge TonightJustin Martin doesn’t fuck around with the feel-good buoyancy of much of San Francisco’s deep house practitioners. Indeed, the jock/remixologist pulls from so many micro-genres–minimal, techno, etc.–that to associate him with the soulfulness of that sound is off the mark a mite. Martin–who along with his brother Christian forms The Martin Brothers–mostly opts out of riding jazz’s blue notes and instead injects his arrangements with the electronic music equivalent of the moody blues. That doesn’t mean his stuff isn’t danceable. Hardly. It’s just that Martin often tempers his ebullient productions with the mordant. (Example: his eerie remix of Radiohead’s “Nude”.) Martin also has a thing for the wobbly EFX and push-button bass of dubstep, just in case you were still considering wrapping him up in a flowery Bay Area bow.
