James Apollo, Little War, Little LessMarterry, out nowWebsiteJames Apollo is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and Brooklyn-to-Seattle transplant, and for his second record, he’s teamed with Damien Jurado, a musician who’s responsible for one of the year’s most talked-about local releases, Maraqopa. Jurado handles production duties on Little More, Little Less, and the result is an album that sounds like a lot of bands you’ve probably listened to. There’s elements of Andrew Bird-esque baroque pop, Western folk in the vein of a band like Calexico, and a fair amount of cabaret strangeness that recalls Tom Waits. Similar to Maraqopa, it’s a subdued, dusky listen, one that’s technically sound even if it doesn’t go anywhere new or unexpected. Listen to opening track “Blessed or Bust” after the jump. Blessed or Bust by James ApolloStream the whole album on Bandcamp. Apollo will play the Columbia City Theater on June 28.
