It’s not enough that one of the Avett Brothers rocks out with his banjo out, but they make country grunge look sexy. The sound is modern bluegrass, but when you’re coming from the Southeast where blues, country, rock and roll, hip-hop, and folk converge it’s going to show up in your music. Murder City Devils are officially too metallic for my tastes, but the lead singer was either the smartest or the craziest motherfucker on the mainstage today. Does he know that he is at an outdoor venue in freakin’ George,WA and that by calling the audience out on their pig-headed bullshit and homophobia (about time) serious hick-like repercussions might occur? Of course he does, and damn if that didn’t make me want to like them more.
