It was announced last month that Bon Iver’s long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s self-released classic For Emma, Forever Ago would be released in June, and yesterday the Justin Vernon-led band released “Calgary,” the first single from their upcoming self-titled album. After a few initial listens, “Calgary” is quite a bit of a departure from Emma’s introspective, acoustic-based folk. The music is both insular and inviting, but it owes these qualities to the synthesizers and electric guitars that now surround Vernon’s evocative tenor. It’s a sound that Vernon explored at length with his Volcano Choir project, and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to think that the new album will owe more to that group’s 2009 effort Unmap than it will to Bon Iver’s debut. You can download the track from the band’s website after entering an e-mail address. Bon Iver drops June 21 on Jagjaguwar. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
