Invincible “Ropes” feat. Tiombe Lockhart from Okayplayer on Vimeo. One of Detroit’s best hip-hop figures, Invincible, is headed to Seattle at the moment and playing two shows that come highly recommended. The “slightly controversial” Israeli/American MC is going to be performing at the UW Ethnic Cultural Theater this evening with Toni Hill (who we just twitterviewed), Sabreena Da Witch from the film Slingshot Hip-Hop and DJ B-Girl. That line-up is crazy and when you think about how rare it is to get two incredible female rappers who happen to be Israeli and Palestinian on the same stage, that alone is worth checking out. Mix in the alluring vocals of Toni Hill and it should be a real good time. The show tonight is free and goes from 7 to 11 p.m.Tomorrow night, Invincible and Sabreena will be performing at Hidmo with DJ B-Girl and Canary Sing also on the bill. So you’re basically going to get two all female showcases of fresh talent and a cross cultural mixture that feels like it could only happen in Seattle. As for why Invincible is “slightly controversial” as I called her above, check out her video for the song “Ropes.” MTV recently decided they wouldn’t play it because it had suicidal undertones, but it seems fine to me. You be the judge. And if you support women in hip-hop, be sure not to miss these shows tonight and tomorrow.
