If there’s one thing I love more than a great rock-and-roll band, it’s pizza, so naturally I perked up yesterday when I was listening to KEXP and they played a song by a New Jersey outfit called Personal and the Pizzas. As if that awesome band name wasn’t enough, their strutting, jaunty music’s also a killer throwback to the Ramones and the Stooges (their MySpace page says they sound like “ONE RAMONES RIFF + ONE STOOGES RIFF + REALLY DUMB WORDS “). Also on their MySpace page, you can give some of the Pizzas’ songs a listen, like “Pizza Army,” “I Ain’t Takin’ You Out,” and my Personal favorite, “I Can Read.” (Sample lyrics: “Mama said I need a G.E.D./ I said, hey!/ I can read, I can read, I can read, I can read.”) All of these songs can be found on Personal and the Pizzas’ record, Raw Pie on Burger Records – but it’s all sold out, so stick to streaming for now.Personal and the Pizzas will be at the Funhouse on July 30.
