“I want all you Seattleites to mosh your way through this, because my tits are halfway out,” pint-sized English MC Lady Sovereign shouted to the crowd at her sold-out show last night. Or at least, I think that’s what she shouted. Lady Sov’s accent is charming, but it’s also ridiculously thick. I had a hard time understanding anything she said. But the rapper put on a high-energy, albeit short, set through which she guzzled Heinekens–when she wasn’t pouring them on fans–and even performed a cover of Metro Station’s pop anthem “Shake It.” The Sporty Spice look alike is an absolute firecracker live. And she showed off her flow on infectious tracks like “Love Me or Hate Me” and “I Got You Dancing.” That croak of a voice she’s got suits her well. But she failed to deliver on the slower songs from her sophomore album Jigsaw. Lady Sovereign is not a singer. But she tried her best to be one on the schmaltzy “Jigsaw” on which she repeatedly crooned the eye roll inducing chorus, “My heart’s like a jigsaw puzzle, pick it up and fix it for me. Can you figure it out?” What I can figure out is that Sov–like Kanye–needs to stick to rapping.
