I first heard of Fidlar from a friend who’s a few years older, and had grown up listening to the skater punk coming out of Southern California in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He was very excited about the band.

Hailing from L.A., Fidlar’s stated mission is to make loud and obnoxious music, making them the heirs to my friend’s beloved JFA. Fully aware of what they are, they have a blast doing it.

Sample lyrics from Sunday’s set:

“Getting fucked up on the 101/mumble, mumble, mumble gonna have some fun.”

“I drink cheap beer/so fuck you.”

“I’m never going to get a job/And today I’m fucked up and now I can’t drive.”

Rare were the moments when the subject matter on stage didn’t deal with drugs, cheap booze and being broke.

Despite that, the is strangely not adolescent. Guitarist Elvis Kuehn rips, and the band clearly know how to make a pedal stomp pay off.

Most importantly, they started a mosh pit, which was the first I’ve seen this Bumbershoot (though I missed Gary Numan, so it could have been No. 2).

“This is by far the longest set we’ve ever played,” lead singer Zac Carper said halfway through their 45 minute gig. “Our sets are usually 20 minutes. This is brutal.”

It was brutal, but not in any bad way.
