I could go on and on for days about the awesomeness of the great Oakley Hall, the most amazing band in America right now. They’re playing tonight, opening for some kid named Oberst at the Paramount. It’s a weird pairing, for sure, but it’s one that will work to the Hall’s favor. They are an unstoppable freight train of American rock. But…do you know where they got their awesome name? That’s right, one of Thomas Pynchon’s favorite authors, Oakley Maxwell Hall. I haven’t read Oakley Hall’s books yet, but I just checked out the above, Warlock, from the library. After the death of Wallace Stegner, Hall was considered the dean of California writers. I believe Hall is still alive, at 86, and living in San Francisco. I have no idea if he knows a band was named after him, however.
