Helplessness Blues, Fleet Foxes’ sophomore LP on Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, sold 91,000 records in its first week, making it the #4 record on the Billboard album chart. — The 91,000 records Fleet Foxes have sold is twice as many in its first week as Cake’s Showroom of Compassion (44,000), which debuted at #1 in January.– Helplessness Blues sold more units than Jennifer Lopez’s Love, which moved 83,000 records and debuted at #5 this week.– Helplessness Blues was one of the most anticipated releases in Sub Pop history. The Shins’ Wincing the Night Away– the closest comparable release in terms of anticipation–debuted at #2 in 2007, selling 118,000 copies in its first week.– The last Seattle band to top the Billboard album charts is Death Cab for Cutie, whose 2008 album Narrow Stairs claimed the top spot with 144,000 copies sold in its first week.– Helplessness Blues is the last record in the band’s current deal with Sub Pop (U.S.) and Bella Union (UK), and frontman Robin Pecknold is already daydreaming about what he’ll do–possibly independently–next, telling Pitchfork: “I don’t know that we’re really going to need a label for the things we’re thinking about doing next. We want to do some non-album stuff first. That would probably just mean, like, a download. I’ve thought about doing a subscription service, where people pre-pay and then we send them 12″s as they’re finished, with one song on each side.”He later clarified via Twitter, saying: “We love Sub Pop / Bella Union!
