There’s always the fear that the band’s next full length album–Tidelands, currently planned for a September release–will hit the sophomore slump. Fortunately, there’s a window into the Moondoggies’ new music, via an upcoming EP of songs which, according to Hardly Art’s website, didn’t make onto Tidelands. It’s curious that “Fly Mama Fly”–the first song released from You’ll Find No Answers Here–was excluded from full-length. Sure, it lacks and the bounce and rawness of “Changing” or “Save My Soul,” but it’s a solid ballad, opening with clean harmonies and maintaining a lovely, melancholy rhythm. Maybe it was too haunted for Tidelands. Or maybe it was overlooked because the Moondoggies wrote more material that’s actually better than this song. And if that’s the case, well, sophomore slump be damned.
