Granted, Ratatat’s instrumental electronic rock serves as the perfect soundtrack for heavy drug and alcohol consumption. But even I wasn’t prepared for the crazy fuckery that went down on Sunday night. How many Ratatat fans actually made it into work this morning? My guess is four outta 10–and that’s being generous. There were at least a handful of people at any given time downing vodka out of flasks in the venue’s corners. A guy got kicked out for rolling a joint in one of the bathroom stalls. Several pairs of suspiciously dilated pupils dotted the crowd. Before getting inside I got my pepper spray confiscated and was then interrogated for several minutes over the prescription medication in my purse. (Sadly, they were antidepressants. I’m way too broke to buy ecstasy.)The New York hailing duo (guitarist Mike Stroud and synthesizer driver Even Mast) effortlessly kept the crowd enthralled during their sold-out performance. Looking like two grimy college students dressed in worn-in jeans and t-shirts, they pummeled through a 75-minute set that pulled from their 2008 album LP3 and several older tracks, including my favorite, “Wildcat.” The performance included plenty of strobe lights, kaleidoscope-style video visuals, and confetti explosions. (Those under the influence were dying of happiness.) I spent a majority of the show sitting in the bar area, content to submerge myself in Ratatat’s pulsating beats from a distance. (I was too tired to be anything but sober last night, anyway.) But it was great to see all those fervent fans crowd surfing and sweatily writhing the night away. I loved the crowd almost as much as I loved Ratatat’s high-energy performance. Drink some water and get some rest today, ya’ll! Your bodies deserve it.
