Full Disclosure: the lead singer of this band is the homeboy of some homeboys, which of course makes him a homeboy. To some, that might disqualify me from writing objectively about Bon Iver (pronounced Bon–e–vair) . I choose instead to think that becoming familiar with all of his inside jokes and tangentially related dramas adds another level to my appreciation of the music. The curtain’s been pulled back, but the music remains as powerful as it did the first time I heard “Creature Fear” some two years ago. But familiarity didn’t make the experience of watching Justin Vernon perform any less of a surreal experience. To hear how the band has added a sense of fraternity to the sound whereas on the recorded version there was only the loneliness that made “For Emma, Forever Ago” famous, to see Mos Def sneak on-stage after his own set and bob his head quietly to the beat–both of these are tough things to wrap your head around. I mean, this was a person that only a few weeks ago I was drinking PBR with on my front porch. This was the best set by any band I’ve seen thus far into the weekend, home-cooking be damned.
