Fans are descending on Viretta Park for a work party on Sunday to clean up the park that is a favorite destination for mourners of the late Kurt Cobain and appreciators of Nirvana. Cleanup at the park (151 Lake Washington Blvd. E.)–close to Cobain’s former Denny-Blaine home–is set run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. “Despite the fact that Nirvana fans continue to make the park a major destination, the condition of the park has slipped into a sad state, with the majority of the natural area and even more formal areas infested with invasive plants,” organizers wrote on their website. “The park suffers from an outdated landscape design and a lack of imagination and involvement by the community. There is very little interaction with the park beyond fans visiting the benches and very little interaction with the flora.”Organizers are looking for people to help with the actual cleanup of the park, as well as to supply food and music, and ask interested parties to RSVP so they can plan accordingly. The group hopes this will be the first of many work parties to restore the park, and create ” . . . a destination to remember and celebrate the life of Kurt Cobain and the music of Nirvana with creative memorial installations that reflect both the character of the park and the creativity of the band and the dedication of fans that visit the park.”
