Even if Jakob Dylan did pack the house in a major way, of all the coffeeshop-friendly acts that did and will play the Starbucks stage this year (surely, you noticed the trend), folk troubadour Kathleen Edwards is surely my favorite. At Sasquatch, she had a full band, but this time, it was just her and Jim Bryson, regaling the audience with the best of her new album, like the title track, “Asking for Flowers” and “I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory”; she also played a languid fiddle tune that didn’t make it onto Asking for Flowers, which is curious, since the song I consider to be one of her few lyrical failures, a cheesy alphabet song about relationship angst (A is for all the times I bit my tongue, B is for bullshit and you fed me some…you get the picture) did make the cut. But since the rest of the thing is so strong– “Asking for Flowers” gave me chills the first time I heard it– I guess I can forgive her a lemon or two.
