Evan PerigoTexas in July will be performing January 12 at El CorazonA lot went into writing your favorite song, but how much do you really know about it? This week Ben Witkowski, bassist of Lancaster, Penn. hardcore band Texas in July, delves into heavy riffing, whammy pedals and keeping the passion in the band’s music for the fans. Song: “Bed Of Nails”Album: Texas In JulyRelease Date: The full album was released through Equal Vision Records on Oct. 9, but we also released this song separately as a single a bit earlier, on Sept. 11. When it was written: May 2012Where it was written: This song was written at the Machine Shop studios in Belleville, NJ. We recorded the album there, our third full-length, with producer Will Putney. Favorite line in the song: “See to the core of the underground”Which part was the hardest to come up with: The riffing sections. This song is insane, it’s so fast. Unlike anything we have ever put together. If you could go back and change anything, what would it be: Would have written this song two years sooner.Odd fact about song: It was our very first time using a whammy pedal in our music. Adam [Gray, drummer] and I called it our “hybrid metal song.” There is a very distinct guitar part in this song, triggered by the infamous whammy pedal. I remember when Christian wrote this part in the studio and it’s like our world as a band spun around. One different thing after another on this record, and this was the icing on the cake. What was your inspiration for writing the song: Looking back on what I have learned about the industry over the past few years. When was your favorite time performing it live: Definitely at a recent home show at the Chameleon Club in Lancaster. It’s always nice presenting new music to our fans at home. I feel like they get extra excited. What is the meaning behind the song: This song is an expression of certain frustrations brought on by being a touring musician. You can choose to open your eyes to it, or close them. This song is for anyone who has closed them. Everyone talks, but nobody listens. The lyrics are driving and angry through the whole song. Speaking about the “real” in the music scene and the “fake.” There are bands branding their bands in unfair ways and doing things behind the scenes the wrong way that fans will never see, but I wish for them to see passion and love on CD and on stage, not just an act put on to skate by unnoticed.
