CSS: From “Snoopy Dogg” to Paris Hilton

Brazil sends us another hot young export.

The clamor of Carnaval. Majestic Rio beaches packed with scantily clad cuties. Jungles teeming with cuddly spider monkeys. Seriously, try to name one thing associated with Brazil that sounds neither fun nor sexy. Yet another export has been enhancing the country’s hedonistic, party-hearty rep in recent years.

CSS is the São Paulo–based pop outfit that famously lifted its moniker from a Beyoncé quote and gave us the catchiest iPod jingle ever. That “music is my boyfriend” hook that got stuck in your head back in 2007 comes from “Music is My Hot Hot Sex,” a track from the band’s self-titled debut.

Fresh from touring Europe, CSS is back in the States promoting album number three, La Liberación, which—from the confectionary pop of lead single “Hits Me Like a Rock” to its punky title track—is arguably the band’s most eclectic offering to date. Before their Tuesday Neptune show, we checked with Lovefoxxx, CSS’ quirky, often unitard-clad frontwoman.

SW: When and where did you record La Liberación?

Lovefoxxx: We did that in 2010 in São Paulo. Adriano (producer and multi-instrumentalist Cintra) has a studio there, so we would go there every day. It was a good experience because we had so much time to do it. This is also one of the reasons why we have guests—Bobbie Gillespie (Primal Scream), Ratatat and Cody (Critcheloe of Ssion) and Mike Garson. We always wanted to have guests, but we never had enough time to operate.

But no Justin Timberlake this time around?

Yeah, he just never replied to our request. But our first option was Snoopy Dogg. Snoop Dogg. I always say Snoopy Dogg. We would like to have him, but we never asked for Snoop Dogg.

One of my favorite songs of yours is “Meeting Paris Hilton.” Have you actually met Paris Hilton?

Yeah, we did. We met her at Coachella in 2007. Her security guard came to us. It was just moments before we went onstage. Then she came by and said hi. And then she said [imitating Paris Hilton], “Oh yes, I think I say bitch a lot.” You know, with that L.A. voice. “Oh my god, totally. Bitch [laughs].”

So she’s a fan of the song you wrote about her.

Yeah, but she was sweet. She was never a bitch.
