Contour on First Avenue is a venue chameleon that throws dance parties aimed at Europe transplants as easily as it does CD release parties for local hip-hop artists. It attracts plenty of 20-somethings because its afterhours go until 6 a.m. on weekends. The club’s website promised that Friday night would guarantee visitors “always have a great time and a fun and sexy crowd.” Apparently, a fun and sexy crowd is code for European. And it takes a whopping $15 cover–for ladies too–to mingle with these beautiful people.

Two guys named DJ Jelly and DJ Boombar played Serbian dance music the entire night to an enthusiastic albeit small crowd of 30 or so (no wonder they had to jack up the cover charge). Almost everyone in the room hailed from Eastern Europe. The guys were all dressed in designer ripped jeans and tight black shirts a la American Idol’s Simon Cowell. The girls showed off their legs and balancing skills in five-inch stilettos. “It’s like walking on stilts drunk,” one divulged. They teetered and tottered away on the small dance floor while their male counterparts smoked cigarettes and spoke in Serbian on the patio.
Contour has an artsy ambiance to it, thanks to its intriguing (or creepy, take your pick) statues of headless naked women hanging from the bar, burgundy curtains, and dark wooden tables. Also naked–but not headless–was a girl having sex in one of the women’s bathroom stalls. The unmistakable noise of two people getting it on caused several girls who were attempting to touch up their makeup to leave in a hurry, giggling and talking smack.
The downside to a club night that attracts 30 or so Europeans on a regular basis of course, is that they all know each other’s business. The bathroom sex girl’s cousin was informed just minutes later to what was going down, to which he exclaimed, “But she only lost her virginity two months ago!” To which another guy snickered loudly and replied, “That’s definitely a lie–trust me, I would know.”
