You might expect this U District beer bar to be overpopulated with Ambercrombie-sporting business majors, but the fact is, the Monkey Pub is nearly frat-boy free. Despite its prime location within the three or four blocks that might as well be known as the Ave Annex, this charmingly no-frills rock and roll club is more akin to Zak’s than Dante’s across the street. With just shy of 20 beers on tap, a menu perfectly suited to those who frequent the frozen-food aisle, a nice array of gaming opportunities, and a damn decent jukebox, this pretension-free pub is the perfect place for slumming, shooting pool, or seeing a band. And if you can manage all three on a single Friday night, more power to you. 5305 Roosevelt Ave. N.E., 206-523-6457.
