Chad Channing, center, and his band, Before Cars, play Lounge Acts, a benefit for the Kurt Cobain Memorial Foundation in Aberdeen on Saturday. Candlebox is also on the bill. The event is sold out!”It’s going to be interesting stepping foot in Aberdeen, becuase I haven’t been there since I prepared for the recording of Bleach,” Channing told me yesterday, referencing the Nirvana debut that gets re-issued next month. “That’ll be interesting for me, kind of a mini-reunion of sorts.”Channing, who played drums on most of the tracks on Bleach, is writing songs and playing bass in his current project, Before Cars. Channing says Walk Back — a pop album the band released last summer — is something he’s wanted to release for years.”(It’s) almost kind of a self anthology, sort of,” he says. “It’s songs that I wrote even before I was in Nirvana, to songs as recent as this last summer.”When he’s not working with Before Cars or his side project, Paundy, Channing’s raising his two kids: Lucy, 7, and Nolan, who’s less than a month old, at his home near Hood Canal in Kitsap County. “What I’m doing nowa days, it’s completely detached from the stuff that I used to. It’s very different from the old days,” he says. “These days I spend most of my time looking forward, so to speak.”
