And nostalgia!We’ve recruited our old friend Krist Novoselic — former Nirvana bassist, frequent writer, and constant gardener — to interview his old pal Eugene Kelly from the The Vaselines. The interview is running in the September issue of SW’s music magazine, Reverb Monthly (out Wednesday) that is dedicated to all things Bumbershoot. The Vaselines are playing the first-ever Sub Pop stage at the fest on Monday, Sept. 3.Nirvana and The Vaselines have a long history of friendship and appreciation that was immortalized on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged, when the band covered The Vaselines’ “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For a Sunbeam,” featuring Novoselic on the accordion. (It must be said that Krist has never stopped playing “Sunbeam” on the accordion.)We’ll post the interview on Wednesday. For now, he’s a taste of the exchange:Novoselic: Do you really hate the ’80s?Kelly: I think we hate the nostalgia about the ’80s more than anything. The whole nostalgia thing just really annoys me, because it’s less interesting. Novoselic: You know, nostalgia drives me crazy. It’s so pervasive. It’s everywhere. People look back at the good old days, and it’s like, they weren’t that good.Kelly: Yeah, the ’80s were pretty terrible – the politics were terrible, the fashion was terrible, a lot of the music was terrible, and there was so much crap going on, and people look back and think the ’80s were fantastic. Well, we lived through that, and it wasn’t that great.Novoselic: I have never heard anyone say that the 80s were fantastic. I heard, the ’60s and ’70s, there’s a lot of lore about that time. But we came of age in the ’80s. That’s when I discovered punk rock music, and I actually had a blast in the ’80s.
