There’s a certain type of nocturnal crowd that’s distinctly West Seattle. They’re typically in their 30s and 40s, but drink like they’re in their 20s. They’re more apt to appreciate classic rock than in-the-moment indie rock or hip-hop, prefer the shot-and-a-beer approach to modern mixology, and are more likely to venture to Burien or Vashon than to the mainland when the peninsula gets a little claustrophobic. From the time it opened, the Feedback Lounge has attracted precisely this sort of crowd, which means it’s catching the demographic co-owner Jeff Gilbert—an ex-Rocket editor who’s lived on the west side (and driven the same car) for 23 years—intended to court when he opened the place, best described as one rock geek’s vision of the perfect bar. Housed next to a recently opened Zeek’s Pizza in a massive space once occupied by the Beveridge Place Pub (which moved across the street into newly constructed digs), the Feedback, with its shrine to rock paraphernalia and concert DVDs playing overhead, is the bar EMP would open if it ever wanted a West Seattle satellite. The food is surprisingly ambitious (Kalbi steak strips on garlic-buttered farfalle, anyone?), and the house cocktails (the Whiskey Smash—bourbon, muddled lemon, simple syrup, mint, and lemon bitters— was just that) slightly more affordable than you’ll find across the bridge—another West Seattle hallmark. Still, the space’s largesse poses a challenge. The back room, which Beveridge Place filled with bar games, would be perfect for live music, but the state’s sprinkler-system requirement makes that a prohibitive investment for Gilbert. But he’s already stocked the bar’s event calendar with rock-related events, giving the Feedback Lounge the distinct feel of Rocksport without the sport.
