A packed house crowded into the Paramount last night for a new and improved show from English indie-pop group Alt-J. The band started off the night with a handful of hits from its debut album An Awesome Wave including “Fitzpleasure,” “Something Good,” and a rousing rendition of “Matilda” that had the audience loudly chiming in on the chorus. This was followed by newer material from its recent release This Is All Yours which didn’t elicit as much interaction but still held the crowd’s attention. In the past, Alt-J’s live shows at Deck the Hall Ball and Sasquatch! (and others) have been drab and uninteresting. The group’s music is fantastic, original, and addictive, but somehow the live act doesn’t translate the superior experience that is listening to its studio albums from the comfort of home. Despite such a history, last night’s performance was really fun, visually stunning (thanks to an elaborate light show its added) and much more interactive. Whoever or whatever kicked Alt-J’s butts into gear, the group is much better for it.

Check out the slideshow of Alt-J’s performance as well as its opener The Acid.
