A few weeks ago, Pearl Dragon of local hip-hop group Champagne Champagne trekked over to the Weekly office for an impromptu listening session of the group’s self-titled, debut release. We sat in my office listening to song after song of black Anime soundtrack style electro hip-hop and I remember feeling like these cats needed to release this record now, take it with them to SXSW (where they eventually killed it this past weekend), so that the music world could walk away with copies and blog about Champagne Champagne like they were the Black Kids circa 2007.Well, as I understand it, the trio never did press up official copies to take on the road with them, but thankfully, they have made the entire album available for download. By clicking on this link, you can shoot right to their site and purchase the 11-track download for $10. On it, you’ll hear crazy songs like the porn-tastic, “Champagne Loves Your Brain,” and the melodic “Cali Bud” featuring Jwl B. of Yo Majesty. The latter is one of my favorites and there’s plenty of others like “Tropical Trina” and “Hollywood Shampoo” that sound unlike anything else local hip-hop artists are attempting. Be sure to check it out.
