2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the Presidents of the United States of America’s founding. Like the wine drummer Jason Finn was secretly sipping during the show, they just keep getting better with age.Sunday’s installment of PUSAfest felt like a comedy act and concert rolled into one. Walking out of the Showbox at the end of the night, I overheard another concert-goer say: “That’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time.” I would have to agree. The trio seemed as excited as a teenage band playing their first show. The liveliness kept a steady high from start to finish. And growing older has clearly not effected the group members at all. Basitarist Chris Ballew demonstrated his vast amount of energy by jumping all around the stage and drummer platform, then practically doing sprints across the entire length of the stage multiple times during the final moments of their three song encore set. PUSA also presented a treat to the audience, by debuting a new song called “Finger Monster”. The title could be misleading but has nothing to do with their love-gone-sour theme actually. The straightforward song discusses being afraid of a multiple eyed, orange horned creature on his finger. An eccentric and random jam, like a signature PUSA song should be.
