Writer Kim O’Donnel, who has written for The Washington Post and now runs a blog called Licking Your Chops, launched Eat Down the Fridge earlier this year. The concept: Take a break from shopping for food for one week and eat what you have. Rid the pantry of half-used bags of various grains and pastas, ravage your condiments, and empty out the crisper and freezer. Treat it like you’re rotating your closet and busting out all your big, soft sweaters. Make room for all the soup you’ll be making and cider you’ll be drinking. This is a dangerous proposition for me, as my freezer is, as of right now, 10% edamame, 25% pork products, and 65% vodka and homemade aquavit. I’ll just stick to the edibles. The state of my overstuffed fridge has me starting a couple days early . . . You can follow along with others on the site if you’re social, or just do it.
