Where: Marie Callender’s, 9538 First Ave N.E., 526-5785, www.mcpies.com.When: Sunday morning, April 5.The Soak: Flyover-America to the core in its faux-colonial glory, MC’s, just a few blocks south of Northgate, attracts what looked to be an after-church crowd; this is where Hank Hill would take Peggy if they wanted to go somewhere special for her birthday. Seniors and their grandkids dominate the demographic, but big eaters of all ages come to enjoy what has to be the best brunch deal in town–a $15.99 ($17.59 with tax) all-you-can-eat buffet. I brought three (shall we say) healthy eaters to, as plus-one puts it, “put the hurt on” their generous spread. A long table of chafing dishes stocked with salmon, eggs Benedict, sausages, home fries, biscuits and gravy, and more stands across from the well-laden pie/muffin/bread table and up and around the corner from the long salad bar. But MC’s ace of trumps is the custom waffle and omelet station. Pile up a bowl with savories and hand it to the white-coated cook, who’ll dump it on and swirl it into a cup or so of beaten egg poured from a pitcher onto the griddle. I chose mostly shrimp, and three minutes later returned to my table with a light fluffy mound of crustacean heaven. To top my waffle, I chose blueberries and coconut–I know! the mimosa had made me all giddy!–and it was scrumptious. Success of the Soak: Did we each eat our $17.59 worth? Well, let’s just say the corporation’s profits are notably down this quarter.
