What: Pizza!Where: Lola’s South City Bakery, 5607 S. Rainier Ave.When: About two weeks agoCost: About $12 (sorry, my receipt wasn’t itemized and we bought loaves of bread and a couple cookies, as well)Official Tasting Notes: First off, Lola’s South City Bakery is an adorable little place and the owners treat welcome you as if you were in their home. It’s in the neighborhood of Hillman City, which I had never heard of, presumably because it’s literally just down the street from attention-hog Columbia City (kidding about the “attention-hog” bit). As Jonathan Kauffman pointed out on Voracious a while back, this newly opened bakery specializes in bread, pastries, ice cream and pizza. The latter was my reason for going. When it comes to pizza, crust is oft taken for granted. This isn’t the case at Lola’s. My wife and I ordered two separate kinds, a margerita with field-roast sausage and another smothered in carmelized onion and gorgonzola cheese. Both were delicious for the same reason, however: the crust. This was a crust for chewing slowly and savoring, because with any random bite a little burst of salt would awaken your mouth, which was an especially great compliment to the tanginess of the gorgonzola. I’m not sure whether the saucy margherita was over-powered by the boldness of the onion and gorgonzola, but I found myself digging the latter a hell of a lot more. My only regret was there was no bottle of chianti to accompany either one.
