What I should have had.By Halley GriffinWhat? $1 Taco Tuesdays at the Wild Rose. 1021 E. Pike Street. (206) 324-9210What will $13 get you? Five $1 tacos, a 2-person serving of chips and guacamole and a “big-ass can” of PBR.Recommended? Not for the tacos.According to legend, the Wild Rose during the 1990s was a pretty wild place. Men weren’t allowed inside, and an unsuspecting 20-something on her own would have been swarmed. My dining buddy hadn’t set foot inside since somewhere around 1997, when she brought her partner around for some of their first dates, and was totally taken aback when I mentioned where I was headed that evening. “You’re going to be eaten alive,” she told me, and immediately volunteered for bodyguard duty. As her babysitter, she seemed to accept it as her duty to escort me. As soon as we stepped inside though, it became clear that the Rose had changed with the times.First of all, there were men. Second, there couldn’t have been more than 30 people in the two-room bar. Granted, it was 8:30 on a Tuesday night, but for $1 tacos there should have been a crowd. Turns out we should have followed the crowd (or absence of). Wanting to take it slow, I started out with two tacos and the big-ass can of PBR. Once my two pitiful, three-inch tacos (one beef, one bean) arrived, we understood Taco Tuesday’s lack of appeal. The tacos weren’t bad, but I’m not sure I would have even considered 50 cents to be great deal, and after five, I started dreaming of all the other actually tasty things I could have eaten for that cash. The homemade guacamole was bland and unappealing, and my PBR never even made an appearance. The Wild Rose has plenty of actually appetizing dishes on their menu, and my partner had it right when she ignored the deals and opted for a house salad. I’d eat there again – just never on Taco Tuesday.
